Our Programs

Each year, we identify core programs for US support, so that our American friends and donors can truly visualize the impact of their giving. Of course, we also view our donors as true partners in our mission, and so we invite them to support any Children’s Medical & Research Foundation programs that may fit within their charitable vision. You can learn more about the breadth of these programs by visiting our Irish site.

In 2016, the following have been selected as our US flagship programs:

Cardiac Day Unit

There are over 550 children annually that now attend the Children’s Heart Centre at Crumlin Children’s Hospital. We now need to help those patients in their recovery with adequate facilities as they return regularly for check-ups and treatments as outpatients annually. In 2016, we are fundraising to build single bedrooms in the Cardiac Day Unit at Our Lady’ Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, the second part of the Children’s Heart Centre.

These new bedrooms will offer more dignity and privacy for our patients and their families, helping to make their short stay with us as stress-free as possible. A single bedroom will have room for a parent to stay with their child for day admittances and will offer en-suite facilities, making the experience more comfortable for the whole family and alleviate the crowded single-room facility that currently exists. These rooms will be a ‘home away from home’ for families, allowing a parent or carer to be present by their child’s bedside, which is very important for the child’s recovery.

MD/PhD Program

All medical advances are made on the basis of good clinical research; nowhere is this more important than in the area of childhood disease. A specific aim of this programme is to attract and develop an increased number of clinicians into the field of paediatric research; to provide a supportive infrastructure to allow them to be successful, and to fund them in pursuit of an MD/clinical PhD qualification.

In the long term, the production of research active clinicians in the field of paediatric should allow the gap between scientific advancement, and the development of new diagnostic/prognostic tests and treatments to be bridged. Such individuals will also add to the development of a sustainable research community in pediatrics. In 2015, CMRF in the US provided grants of almost $400,000 to fund 11 of these young doctors and in 2016 the ask is the same to continue this development.
